Precipizio was the one-word theme of this year’s Le Parole della Montagna festival, a two-week series of lectures and discussions with authors, poets, and philosophers that takes place each summer in the small hill towns of our area in Le Marche.
Delightful! I will share this with my sister& bro.-in-law who spent their junior yr. at Loyola, in Rome, in 1970. They are headed for Italy this September for six weeks. Their Napa born daughter, Anna Savino Brizio, met & fell in love with her husband 15 years ago, while tutoring English. They started The Barolo Wine Club and live in the Langhe Valley with their two kids. The Italian love affair is alive & well!
This piece reminded me of a town I used to visit as a child. Small, quiet and very safe. It’s called Bagnoli del Trigno, in Molise. Enjoy your break, and buon ferragosto in anticipo.
Eric, I'm so glad a mutual friend sent this to me (because of the tango mention) leading me to discover your wonderful blog. Greetings from Buenos Aires!
Wonderful-- thanks so much for the kind comments and also for sharing! It's interesting to me how many people's love of Italy was kindled in college semesters abroad-- what a remarkable exchange program these university programs have been, both for the Americans and the Italians. Thanks so much for reaching out. And I must say, drinking Barolo in the Langhe Valley is about as good as it gets. Bravo to Anna and her husband!
I hope you will-- there are some lovely mountain towns here. And you're right-- you often find some very unexpected surprises in these small, inaccessible place. We came upon a Michelin-starred restaurant in one tiny town in the Sibillinis, along a gravel road with chickens and pigs wandering around outside. You just never know what you'll find.
So glad you enjoyed it. Yes-- Abruzzo is wonderful as well, particularly the natural scenery around the Gran Sasso. Really appreciate you taking time to comment. Have a wonderful rest of the summer!
Smerillo is very small but quite charming-- worth a visit. Was going to reach out to you as we're in Marche for most of August. Are you around this month? Would be fun to grab a coffee sometime. Where are you in Central Marche?
WOW! So great to hear from you-- really appreciate you reaching out. Just subscribed to Liner Notes and looking forward to catching up on what you're doing. But it sounds like things are good in Buenos Aires. What a wonderful surprise to see your name pop up today. Let's stay in touch!
Wonderful much needed tonic, from the travel log to the magnificent photos to the valuable insights! Thank you so much, and Enjoy le vacanze!
Must make a visit from our home in central Marche - Grazie tanto
The Marche are incredible ! And so too, I realise, is Abbruzzo. Thank you for a wonderful philosophical take on geography and history!
So awesome! I remember Rocca Calascio! We almost took the long trail descending down to the village of Santo Stefano di Sessanio. What a place!
💃

Excellent points. The mountain towns of Italy are great fun. I like to dance there too. You've inspired me to try the Marche. Grazie!

That's so interesting that you visited as well. We seem to run on parallel wavelengths. It is a kind of unforgettable spot-- high drama so to speak...
