It may seem strange that in Italy, only one specific day should be set aside for a picnic. The Pasquetta holiday is rooted in a desire among city dwellers to spend a day in the countryside. It’s not immediately clear why they all need to spend the same day in the countryside.
I sure could go for a President’s Day mattress sale right about now - they’re not even capitalising on the coronation as a chance to sell a few King-sizes. Real shame.
Also - very pleased to put a face to the Little Brown Dog name after all these years! (Or is LBD in addition to the pup who adopted you both?)
Who woulda thought you'd be missing President's Day? Next you'll have a longing for the Labor Day Parade :) If only the English were a bit less linear in their thinking, they would understand why a royal coronation should warrant fast-food discounts, furniture discounts, and maybe a blow-out used car sale. They'll probably do a picnic though.
Actually, Little Brown Dog is not the one who adopted us-- or at least LBD only adopted us for a day. Fritz was our dog for quite a number of years, and I'm sure he'll show up in the Substack letter sooner or later! Little Brown Dog showed up out of nowhere that day, and followed us everywhere. Now I think he may have been adopted by a family along the road we were walking on-- he shows up once in a while and runs out to greet us. Cute guy. Very persistent.
Thanks so much for reading and all the support. Hope you get something good out of this whole royal thing...
This is so great! I am imagining that harrowing drive to Contrada Durano in the snow! I was white-knuckled on a sunny, dry day! It’s so fun to read about your adventures. P.S. Little Brown Dog is darling!
Yes-- I'm sure you remember the drive! And of course in the snow, Jimmy continued to do it at exactly the same pace as he would have on an August afternoon! Always appreciate your comments-- love that we share the memories.
Dear Eric! I am so excited to receive your articles. Not only because they are entertaining, informative and well written, but because they confirm my belief that you have found your voice through your love of Italy‼️I look forward to many more delightful chapters and news of little brown dog!
Thanks so much-- can't tell you how much I appreciate the support. Our fingers are always crossed for another return of Little Brown Dog. He always shows up at the most unexpected time.
