Admittedly, Italy is full of old stuff. But much of it isn't for sale. That's why you go to an antique market- with the hope of finding that random object that can now be part of your life, even if it really is a lot heavier than you thought.
They are around-- I managed to get behind one at an inopportune moment. But I have no idea how you find them when you need them. It's a wonderful market, but obviously, a hill town presents certain challenges. Next time, I'm buying books and vinyl records :) You're very lucky to live nearby-- such a beautiful town and area.
I love this story so much! I live in Cortona for the past few decades, and the Arezzo market is my favorite activity. Thank you for describing it so well and was such humor!
The bit about finding something others overlooked is on point ❤️ It's such a great feeling.
The next big flex is not about finding stuff, but about finding markets themselves: both in Italy and France, the mission is now to find the smaller, more hidden market that have great stuff for cheaper!
I live near Arezzo and go to the market every month - and have never seen a man with a wheelbarrow! I didn’t even know it was a thing! I shall be keeping my eyes open next weekend…
And me in traction :) Speaking of which, we're thinking of you with your upcoming surgery in April. Hang in there-- I'm sure it's a painful wait. Glad you're getting it taken care of.
Agreed about finding the lesser known markets-- it's funny because I've found that the size (as in number of vendors) doesn't really matter much. I've had as much fun, and as much shopping success , at small local ones around our area in Marche-- like the one in Fermo during the summer, or Ascoli Piceno, as I've had at the larger ones. A couple of stalls is usually enough to keep me digging around for a few hours. The main charm of Arezzo for me was a chance to see the town as well. Love to hear any suggestions you might have...
Lucky you-- it's a lovely place. Of course the market is fun, with a wonderful spirit about it, but we also had some great meals and the Piero della Francesca pieces at the Basilica di San Francesco and the Cattedrale are amazing. Had hoped to get to the big Vasari show at the museum, but was too busy carrying heavy terracotta pots around :)
I know-- it was a big oversight. C wanted to take one while I was holding the beast, but I wasn't exactly in the mood. Then we left it at our home in Le Marche and were back in Rome when I wrote the piece. I'm going to try to find a reason to post a photo in the near future. Once I can stand up straight again :)
Thanks so much! Yes-- I think you'd love the market. It's a beautiful town and in addition to the stalls, there are a lot of antique shops that are open only during the fair. I definitely should have included a photo-- C wanted to take one while I was holding the beast, but I wasn't exactly in the mood :) Hope you're doing well-- thanks so much for the kind comment!

Next time try the market in Pissignano, which is enormous and much more affordable. Also, photo of your find, please!

Loved your story! Arezzo is such a delightful town. Hope to return there someday.
Great story. I’d love to shop that market! Where’s the pic of your super rare find? Ha! You’ll always have a story when you show it off.
You had me in stitches!

I love Arezzo. It’s my closest town
