A really nice essay on what exists beyond Roma. Last year we visited Albano Laziale where my wife's grandfather was born, and who became a cinematographer and then a political refugee from Mussolini. Died in Madrid at the age of 39 fighting Franco in the Civil War. This year we took the train to Ostia Antica. Nice breaks from the exhilarating messiness of Roma.

Palazzo Farnese was amazing— really beyond what I expected. The Parco dei Mostri is on my list for next time!!! Just couldn’t quite fit that in and do it justice in the time I had. What an interesting region— have really enjoyed your stories about it.

It’s quite remarkable— I really didn’t know that area at all. Now I’m looking forward to going back!

Thanks so much. Wow— that’s a story and a half about your wife’s grandfather. I think you need to write that story.

I love Ostia Antica as well. I keep trying to convince Americans who ask me about Rome in the summer to check out some of these places just outside of the city. People don’t understand how rich in art and history these places are.

Thanks so much for the comment!

Thanks!! Mary Jane and Fulvio were so wonderful to show me around Vetralla. I’m immensely grateful for the community of writers I’ve discovered through Substack. The support of people like Mary Jane and yourself means the world.

Thank you so much! This was a fun trip— spent about 3 days just sightseeing around an area I’d never explored. Villa Farnese is a must-see next time you come to visit us in Rome!

I love Tuscia and the Palazzo Farnese! Next time you’re in the area, you have to visit Civita di Bagnoregio and the Parco dei Mostri in Bomarzo.
