The story of Saint Valentine is a dizzying combination of mistaken identities, reckless embellishment, morbid suffering, and well-intentioned falsehoods. No wonder he’s the patron saint of love, right?
Another great post from you! The best part of going to see the “real” (or at least whole) Saint Valentine in Terni is driving around the Umbrian countryside afterwards.
I loved this article. I laughed out loud more than once. Shared it with friends. I agree that it should be published somewhere with a wider reach. Perfecto!! "Be Mine"
One of the best Valentines Days ever was when my husband drove us to Terni one miserable gray February Saturday. We missed most of the ceremonies & couldn’t get a table anywhere for lunch. We (me, Mark & two 13 year old boys) ended up at McDonalds. But I saw Saint Valentine in his glass case & I was with people I love & love me. Like I said, one of the best Valentines Days ever!
How utterly interesting ! I would think every newspaper in America would love to run this article. Or I can see it being a special segment on 60 minutes. I would pitch this to all of them. Bravo!🩷
OH WOW! This is a much better story than the one I wrote! I had no idea. I do hope that Piero wasn't running around in a goat-skin loincloth at the time. He is Roman after all. This story is kind of a perfect opening scene for a great love story. Made C & I so happy when we read it. Abbracci!
So glad you liked it! It's definitely a strange story-- and have to admit that the skeleton skulls kind of freak me out. Researching it sometimes felt more like Halloween than Valentine's Day. Sending you much love for Friday.
Somehow McDonald's is kind of perfect for Terni :) I was there on a weekday afternoon and they were just getting set up for the Festival di Amore-- complete with bright red Ferris wheel and Bocelli piped in on the loudspeaker. Kind of cracked me up. Great story-- and a living testament to the power of Love to bail out even the roughest situations. Thanks for sharing it!

Great read! I really enjoyed that.
I agree! Terni is not so beautiful, but Spoleto and the hills around there are fantastic. Happy Valentine's Day-- whatever that means....
